PMLF Helps
Finance Interventional Research
Recovery
work is underway at Midway Atoll to save the Hawaiian monk seal
population. Conducted by the Hawaii Wildlife Fund, to whom PMLF
is making substantial contributions, the program is both research
and interventional in nature.
Their recovery is threatened by new sport-fishing, diving and
eco-touring which bring more and more people to their sanctuary.
Entanglements in marine debris, including netting and long lines,
are deadly and tragic. Education of residents and tourists, as
well as monitoring of seals -- and freeing them from nets and
lines -- is the interventional aspect of HWF's mission.
Additionally, the organization
is conducting research to define beach use, survival and inter
atoll movement, prey species preferences plus rates of entanglement.
This information will be used by the US Fish and Wildlife Service,
among other agencies, in making decisions about monk seal recovery
and management of future human activities at Midway.
