Who are
we?
We
are a network of scientists, business people, educators, environmentalists
and caring others. We support research and legislation that will
help save endangered animals. We empower everyday people to become
better stewards of the sea.
We encourage responsible, rather than harmful, human interaction
with ocean mammals. And we seek to educate the public as to what
these species need in order to enjoy life, bear and nurture offspring
-- and endure.
What are
our roots?
PMLF was founded in
1984 by two internationally recognized marine mammal veterinarians,
Rae Stone and Jay Sweeney, who were doing pioneering work with
dolphins at Waikoloa, Hawaii. The name they chose for their new
non-profit organization was Waikoloa Marine Life Fund, and they
put much energy and imagination into its early years. The organization
became Pacific Marine Life Foundation in 1998 to expand its arena
of concern and influence to the entire Pacific Basin.
Drs. Stone and Sweeney are co-owners of
Dolphin Quest and are now separately based on the east and
west coasts of the United States. They continue as advisors to
PMLF, however, for which we are deeply grateful.
Problems
Faced by Marine Life
Man has become the
"endangering" species of Planet Earth. Our modern civilization
threatens the life cycle, longevity and continued existence of
marine life everywhere. Already, some species are gone forever.
Every day the media
reports tragedies involving marine life. These range from long
net fishing entanglements and destruction due to shoreline pollution,
to deliberate harassment, illegal taking and over-fishing of
popular coastal waters. Ignorance is also a factor. An example
is the well intended beach goer who tries to push a pregnant
monk seal back into the ocean -- when this particular species
must give birth on land. (Note: The seal in the photo above
was saved, thanks to our caring scientists.)
PMLF is here to take a stand a scientific, educational
and actively interventional stand to benefit the marine
ecosystems of the Pacific. We invite you to join us. Please click
